Li’l Sibs Weekend
On April 1st, we welcomed about 50 li’l guins for the weekend’s events. Friday, our students and their li’l sibs enjoyed activities like swimming in the Beeghly Natatorium, star gazing at the Ward Beecher Planetarium, fulfilling their “roaring” appetite with a themed dinner at the Christman Dining Hall, cozying up in the Lariccia Lounge to watch The Good Dinosaur, or watching the Youngstown Phantoms take on the Omaha Lancers over at the Covelli Center. Saturday, our students and our li’l guins got to visit the OH WOW! Children’s Center, have fun competing in inflatables and getting their faces painted at the Andrews Rec Center, take an adventure through the Butler Institute of American Art, ice their own dinosaur cookies during a showing of Jurassic World in the Lariccia Lounge, and much more! Overall it was a fun-filled weekend getting to welcome and spend time with our li’l guins!
Housing & Residence Life welcomes new Housing Coordinator
Hi Penguin Family! My name is Justin Munz and I’m the newest member to the Housing & Residence Life staff as a Housing Coordinator here at YSU. A little background, I started working in housing when I became a resident assistant at Thiel College in 2007. I graduated from Thiel in 2010 with a B.S. in Chemistry. I decided to follow my passion for higher education and served a Resident Director Thiel while pursuing my M.S. Ed. in Counseling, specializing in Student Affairs and Leadership at YSU. After graduation in 2013, I worked in the Residence Life Office at Wheeling Jesuit University for two and a half years until I joined our team here in March of this year! There are so many positive things about working in housing! Getting to enhance our students’ experiences while they are here with us, seeing them grow and develop as individuals is one of the most rewarding experiences we get to have. I look forward to starting the fall semester off fresh with the many new faces on staff and in the residence halls! Go Guins! Y and Proud!
Housing & Residence Life hosted our first ever Pre-Spring Break programming week in March. Events included a jeopardy-style game to educate students about healthy food choices at our dining locations. Roughly fifty students stopped by to participate and left with a new piece of information about nutrition and health. We also hosted a tournament of “Volley-pong” (a combination of volleyball and water-pong) in which, twelve teams competed against each other for a spring break themed prize. To unwind in the evening, students came to watch the comedy film “Vacation” in the lounge. The last pre-spring break event held was our Spring Break Blowout! Over eighty students came to try out the unique oxygen bar, listen to music, play games, and drink tasty mock-tails. Pre-spring break week was fun for all and a great way for students to de-stress during mid-terms week.

Each semester as final exam week approaches, the staff members from the Division of Student Experience and Christman Dining Hall put together a midnight breakfast for the students. During this event, staff members volunteer to serve the students a delicious and nutritious breakfast to fuel them up for final exams. Last semester, in addition to great food, the event included a lively and fun lip-sync battle by students and staff members. This year’s Midnight breakfast will be held on Monday, May 2nd from 10pm-midnight at Christman Dining Commons. Students can use their meal plan to participate in the fun and take a break from late night studying.
