I've been accepted — What's next?
Now that you've been accepted, you should activate your MyYSU portal (student email account). Your username and YSU ID were provided with your Letter of Acceptance. If you need to request this information, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (330) 941-2000.
Once your account has been activated you can register for Orientation through your MyYSU portal. On the left side of the screen, under the e-Services for Students menu, select "Register for Orientation". This will take you directly into the 24/7 online reservation system.
New Transfer students may contact an academic advisor prior to attending Orientation to register for classes. Visit here to find your advisor.
Do I need to take Placement Tests?
You should contact the Testing Office to determine your placement test requirements at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can register for a test session at Testing Center. Your placement tests must be completed prior to attending your Orientation session.
All First-Year Undergraduate and most Transfer students are required to take the COMPASS Mathematics Test (CMT). Based on review of your ACT or SAT score, you may be required to take the Composition Placement Test (CPT) and/or the COMPASS Reading Test (CRT). Students with a foreign language requirement may elect to take the Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT) to try to fulfill the requirement, or to place into an intermediate level course.
If you are traveling from out of state, please contact the Office of Placement Testing to check the availability of testing in your area prior to reserving a test session online. Testing for all other students will be administered on campus.
Are First-Year Undergraduate students required to attend Orientation?
Yes. All First-Year Undergraduate students are required to attend Orientation. It is not a requirement for parents or family members to attend with the student, but it is suggested. During the program, parents and family members will attend some sessions with their student, however, only the student will attend the advisement/registration session.
Parent/family member programming will address the issues and transitions students face as they begin their relationship with the University. Please be assured, we realize the importance of parental/family member presence in the students' college career and have designed sessions to meet those needs.
Do New Transfer students attend Orientation?
New Transfer students will be invited to attend a half-day Orientation program. It is strongly encouraged that new Transfer students attend Orientation, however, it is not mandatory. Online Orientation is also an option (for new transfer students only).
New Transfer students should make an appointment with an academic advisor and register for classes prior to attending Orientation.
Is there a charge for Orientation?
All First-year Undergraduate students will be assessed a non-refundable processing/matriculation fee to cover costs incurred for the use of University facilities, the development of publications, meals, and other program/registration costs.
New Transfer students will also be assessed a non-refundable processing/matriculation fee.
Regardless of Orientation attendance, the fee will be billed electronically to your account along with your tuition charges after you register for classes. You can view your account at MyYSU Portal.
If you attend Orientation but decide not to attend Youngstown State University, you are still responsible to pay this fee in full.
I've registered for Orientation — Now what?
Confirmation will be sent via email confirming your scheduled Orientation date. A Reminder will come via email seven days before your session with even more details (parking, Check-In, etc.). If you do not receive confirmation, contact Orientation Services (330) 941-2131.
Remember: Placement testing must be completed prior to attending Orientation. Contact the Testing Office for your required placements at email@example.com. Register for a test session at Testing Center.
When do I meet with my advisor and register for classes?
Academic advisement and registration are important parts of Orientation and will be conducted in individual or group sessions for students according to each academic college.
During your session, an advisor will explain University and program requirements and assist you in deciding which courses to take during your first semester. Academic advisement is a "two-way street" and an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss various options with an advisor. Plan to be an active participant in your advising session. Since the information you will receive in the sessions prior to your advisement session is very important, you will not be permitted to register unless you attend the full session.
New Transfer students are encouraged to make an appointment with their academic advisor prior to attending Orientation.
Will I attend registration/advisement with my parent(s) or guest?
First-Year Undergraduate students do not attend class advisement and registration with parents or guests; parents and guests will have a separate agenda during your session. Students will be assisted by professional advisors and Orientation staff during advisement and registration; these individuals are trained to facilitate advisement and registration for students. Parents should feel free to discuss academic plans at home prior to their student's Orientation session.
When will I receive my student ID?
Once you have met with your advisor and scheduled classes, you can have your photo processed for your official YSU student ID at the Student One Stop located in Meshel Hall (2nd floor).
What is IGNITE?
IGNITE is a two-day extended orientation on Monday, August 21 (or) Tuesday, August 22 where you will start your campus experience. The entire Class of 2021 will be there to connect, prepare for classes, and find your place at YSU.
Will I purchase my books at Orientation?
No, you don't need to. In fact, the YSU Bookstore's supply may not be available depending on your Orientation date. Most students return with a copy of their schedule or wait until the first week of classes to purchase their books. Our staff can help you with purchasing your books during IGNITE.
Please feel free to call the YSU Bookstore (330) 941-3589 or visit their website at YSU Bookstore for more information.
