About Youngstown State University
The University was founded in 1908, when the local branch of the YMCA established a school of law within the Youngstown Association School. The School evolved over the next 60 years, becoming the Youngstown Institute of Technology, then Youngstown College, Youngstown University, and finally Youngstown State University in 1967 when it became part of the Ohio state system.
YSU is a vibrant, thriving institution of higher learning, serving generations of individuals and families across Northeast Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and around the globe. The University has a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service as evidenced by awards in teaching excellence, growth in external funding, and strong community partnerships.
The University offers more than 100 undergraduate majors, including certificates, associates, and bachelors degrees. In graduate education, there are 48 graduate degree programs including three doctoral programs. Additionally, YSU actively participates in a consortium with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), thereby offering pathways to medical and pharmacy degrees. Study abroad and faculty-led study tours throughout the world are also available to students through the Center for International Studies and Programs.
Approximately 11,104 undergraduates and 1,217 graduate students enrolled for Spring 2015. Minority students represent 20.5 percent of the total student population, with international students comprising an additional one percent of the total enrollment. Non-traditional students are 30 percent of the undergraduate population at YSU.
YSU has approximately 370 full-time faculty members. Additionally, there are 36 departmental chairpersons who are administrators with some teaching responsibilities. The average undergraduate class size is 26 in lecture classes and 10 in labs with an overall student to faculty ratio of 18:1. Faculty members are actively engaged in research. YSU faculty were awarded $7.2 million in external grants and contracts in the first half of FY2015.
Beyond the traditional classroom learning experience, YSU has a growing number of online programs. Expanding online options for students and increasing use of technology in the classroom are institutional priorities. The University offers four undergraduate and seven graduate programs fully online.

CLASSIFIED CIVIL SERVICE
YSU currently employs approximately 350 full-time and 150 part-time civil service employees in various support positions including secretarial/clerical, administrative, technical, maintenance, and police.
This Classified Civil Service area serves approximately 1500 job applicants each year. General assistance is provided regarding job applications and referrals, and civil service testing. Applicants are encouraged to check weekly for information regarding current vacancies or civil service examinations.
Services provided to current employees include the following: orientation for new employees, administration of personnel programs such as maintenance of official personnel files, reconciliation of bi-weekly payroll, performance evaluations, leave programs, and general counseling and assistance regarding personnel actions (transfers, promotions, resignations, etc.), employee relations, and other personnel issues and concerns.

PROFESSIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF
Human Resources provides personnel services for over 300 full and part-time professional/administrative (P/A) employees. These services include the following: provides orientation to new employees; prepares employment contracts; maintains employee files and leave records; processes performance evaluations, Continuity of Employment applications and Mid-Point Salary Benefit reviews; coordinates Staff Development Leave requests; and provides general counseling and assistance to employees and department heads.
Additionally, staff assistance is provided to University administrators in the coordination and planning of professional/administrative recruitment activities. This includes processing position advertisements, announcements and appointment contracts. The Office of Equal Opportunity and Disability Services is consulted to ensure adherence to affirmative action/equal opportunity employment procedures.
