ELIGIBILITY: To be an approved participant in any of the Adventure Recreation & Team Building areas or programs which includes but not limited to the elevated challenge course, the climbing wall, Beeghly Natatorium, and off campus programming a participant must adhere to all safety rules and skills test for every program.
ARWC Adventure Recreation Program participants who are experienced or inexperienced in the activity that they are participating in must follow all instructions, safety skills, rules and regulations.
Participants under the age of 18 must also have a parent or legal guardian signature on all waivers. Notes of parental permission are not acceptable in any circumstance.
ARWC reserves the right to refuse participation of any participant.
Have an Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Form in ARWC position, with all appropriate signatures.
Are issued appropriate ARWC-approved equipment specific for the activity they are participating in.
Wear a helmet or sign a Helmet Release Waiver for climbing or elevated teambuilding activity.
Not be permitted to take personal items into the elevated challenge course, climbing wall area except for approved gear and plastic water bottles containing water only.
These policies are specific to the area area and activity that you are participating in. Please be aware that they can change when from one area to another.
All participants must use ARWC provided belay devices, carabiners, and ropes for the climbing wall and ONLY ARWC equipment for the elevated challenge course. No exceptions.
Participants may use their own harness on the climbing wall provided it is inspected by a wall supervisor or intern. All harnesses must be fitted properly according to manufacturer’s specifications. Homemade harnesses will not be permitted.
Helmets are highly recommended, but not required as long as the participant signs a Helmet Release Form.
No loose chalk is permitted. Climbers may use Bison balls, but X-factor is not permitted.
All equipment must be returned at the end of each program or a service charge will incur.
Participants are responsible for assuring that the program staff has twice checked their safety systems prior to entering the elevated challenge course or climbing on the rock wall.
Participants must tie into their harness. Clipping in is not permitted
Swinging across the wall or swinging on the leads for the elevated challenge course is not permitted.
Climbers must climb the designated routes.
Grabbing, pulling or stepping on quick draws or bolt hangers is not permitted.
A climber that is bleeding may not continue to use the wall until the blood is properly cleaned and the wound is covered.
Food, beverages, alcoholic beverages, personal belongings or glass are not permitted in the climbing or elevated challenge course areas. Approved climbing gear and plastic bottles containing water only are permitted at the wall.
All personal possessions such as jewelry, watches, necklaces, rings, excessively loose clothing, etc., must be removed when participating in an adventure recreation program and stored in your locker. Program staff are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Spectators will be allowed at the staffs’ discretion.
Patrons found to be participating in an adventure recreation program under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be stopped from participation and could have disciplinary actions brought against them.
Patrons found to be participating in an adventure recreation program under the influence of prescription medication that could put their participation at a greater risk, will be stopped from participation.
All staff has the right to ask uncooperative or unsafe participants to leave.
Anyone found to be participating in an unsafe manner will be counseled about appropriate techniques, procedures or behaviors first; if continued abuse occurs, participants will be asked to leave. If the participant still continues with inappropriate techniques or behavior, they will be removed from the program and asked to leave the building.
Absolutely no jumping from the top of the bouldering section.
No loitering on top of the bouldering wall unless supervised by an employee.
Spotters must always be used while bouldering.
If bouldering in the cave, a minimum of two spotters are required.
Only employees are permitted behind the wall.
Only use the designated down climb area for descending from the top of the bouldering section.
You may only top out on the bouldering section with permission from an employee and a minimum of two spotters.
No patron may climb onto the top of the bouldering section using the down climbing area or any other area other than the new bouldering wall itself.
When top roping you may not stand on the top of the bouldering wall.
No bouldering is permitted left of the center crack on the bouldering wall while anyone is belaying.
Any accidents or damaged equipment must be reported to an employee immediately.
Proper attire should be worn at all times.
If climbing without climbing shoes, you must wear a helmet.
All personal possessions should be stored in lockers; climbing staff is not responsible for belongings.
Correct commands must be used while climbing and belaying.
Anyone belaying must be anchored to the floor anchors.
Climbers choose own belayer at their own risk.
No bouldering above or below other climbers.
No belaying or lead climbing without proper certification.
No patrons are permitted in the office or behind the desk.
Patrons may not set a route without first getting permission from an employee.
No sitting or lying on the mats near the wall.
All patrons must check in at the desk before climbing
Patrons using own equipment must first have the equipment inspected by an employee.

Elevated Challenge Course, Climbing Wall and Any Other Area On Or Off Campus Used For Teambuilding Activities Or Adventure Recreation Programming
ELEVATED CHALLENGE COURSE / CLIMBING WALL / RAPPELLING / TEAMBUILDING / OR ANY OFF CAMPUS AREAS: There are significant elements of risk in any activities at the elevated challenge course, climbing wall, teambuilding and off campus areas. It is not always within the power of the Youngstown State University Adventure Recreation staff to protect all participants at all times from the hazards of elevated challenge course, rock climbing, rappelling or teambuilding areas. The risk involved in participating in Adventure Recreation programming includes known and unknown dangers such as loss of or damage to equipment, accidental injury, permanent trauma, or loss of life.
Acknowledgment of Risk
I hereby acknowledge and agree that the use of the Youngstown State University elevated challenge course, climbing wall and teambuilding areas have inherent risks. I have full knowledge of the nature and extent of all risks associated with participating in Adventure Recreation programming, including but not limited to:
Injury in the form of cuts, bruises, abrasions, muscle and/or tendon strain, and rope burns.
Injury from equipment or other debris falling from above the participant.
Injury from choosing not to wear a helmet. I understand that helmets are provided free and by choosing not to wear a helmet, I am exposing myself to an increased risk while on the elevated challenge course or climbing wall.
Injury from choosing to wear my personal harness for the climbing wall only. I understand that by using my personal harness that I am responsible for inspecting the harness and monitoring its upkeep.
Failure to follow the above safety policies and procedures and/or follow directions from ARWC Adventure Recreation program staff could result in loss of or damage to equipment, accidental injury, permanent trauma, or loss of life.
The presence, actions or falls of other participants.
Misuse of equipment or facilities in the elevated challenge course, climbing wall or any area used for teambuilding activities.
Injury caused by other participants’ negligence.
Fatigue, chill and/or dizziness, which may diminish reaction time and increase the risk of accident.
Slips, trips, falls or painful crashes while using the facilities or equipment in the ARWC.
I understand the description of these risks is not complete and that other unknown or unanticipated risks may result in injury, illness or death.
In recognition of the inherent risks of the above activity and in consideration of my use of the Youngstown State University Adventure Recreation team building programs including the areas of elevated challenge course, climbing wall and any other area used for teambuilding activity I, the undersigned user, agree to release and on behalf of myself, my heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, and assigns hereby do release hold harmless and indemnify Youngstown State University, its agents, officers, employees, participants, volunteers, and all other persons or entities acting in any capacity on its behalf from any cause of action, claims, or demands of any nature related to my use of the climbing wall, including injury or damage due to the negligence of YSU and its employees, as follows:
I expressly agree and promise to accept and assume all of the risks existing in this activity. My participation in this activity is purely voluntary, and I elect to participate in spite of the risks.
Should Youngstown State University, or anyone acting on its behalf, be required to incur attorney’s fees and costs to enforce this agreement, I agree to indemnify and hold such harmless for all fees and costs.
I certify that I have adequate insurance to cover any injury or damage I may cause to suffer while participating, or else I agree to bear the costs of such injury or damage to myself. I further certify that I am in good health, and that I have no medical or physical conditions that could interfere with my safety in this activity, or else I am willing to assume and bear the costs of all risks that may be created, directly or indirectly, by any such condition.
Harness Release (Sign only if you want to your own harness on the climbing wall)
I voluntarily choose to use my own harness and accept personal responsibility for injuries that may occur as a result of using my harness.
Helmet Release (Sign only if you do not want to wear a helmet)
I voluntarily choose to not wear a helmet and accept personal responsibility for injuries that may occur as a result of not wearing a helmet.
I certify that I have fully read and understood the foregoing policies and procedures, acknowledgment of risks, and assumption of risk and responsibility. I agree to abide by the policies and procedures listed above and follow all directions of the climbing wall staff. I further understand that the terms of this agreement are legally binding.
