Frequently Asked Questions

I've been accepted — what's next?

Now that you've been accepted as a first-year undergraduate or transfer student, you should activate your MyYSU portal.  If you have any problems, contact the Tech Desk at (330) 941-1595.  Your Username and six-digit YSU ID (Y00000000) were provided in your Acceptance packet from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  If you need to request this information, please email enroll@ysu.edu [1] or call (330) 941-2000.

Once your account has been activated, log into your portal at my.ysu.edu [2].  First year students will be directed to the YSU Orientation Portal.  Please read through the information carefully and complete the required tasks on the checklist.  Your final step will be to register for Orientation.

New transfer students may contact an academic advisor prior to attending Orientation to register for classes.  Visit here to find your academic advisor [3].

If you have any further questions, please email orientation@ysu.edu [4] or call First Year Student Services at (330) 941-2131.

Do I need to take placement tests?

All first year undergraduate and most transfer students are required to take the COMPASS Mathematics Test (CMT). Based on review of your ACT or SAT score, you may be required to take the Composition Placement Test (CPT) and/or the COMPASS Reading Test (CRT).  Students with a foreign language requirement may elect to take the Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT) to try to fulfill the requirement, or to place into an intermediate level course.

If you are traveling from out of state, email the Testing Office at testing@ysu.edu [5]  to check the availability of remote testing in your area prior to reserving a test session online. Testing for all other students will be administered on the YSU campus.  All placement tests must be completed prior to attending your Orientation session.

For further information call the Testing Office at (330) 941-1343 or (330) 941-1344.

Are first year undergraduate students required to attend Orientation?

All first year undergraduate students are required to attend Orientation.  It is not a requirement for parents or family members to attend with the student, but it is suggested.  During the program, parents and family members will attend some sessions with their student, however, only the student will attend the advisement and registration session.

Parent/family member programming will address the issues and transitions students face as they begin their relationship with the University.  Please be assured, we realize the importance of parental/family member presence in the students' college career and have designed sessions to meet those needs.

Do transfer students attend Orientation?

New transfer students will be invited to attend a half-day Orientation program.  It is strongly encouraged that students attend Orientation, however, it is not mandatory.  Online Orientation is also an option (for transfer students only).

Transfer students should make an appointment with an academic advisor and register for classes prior to attending Orientation.  Visit here to find your academic advisor [3].

I've registered for Orientation — now what?

Confirmation will be sent via email confirming your scheduled Orientation date; a reminder will come one week prior to your Orientation date with details regarding parking, check-in, etc.  If you do not receive confirmation, please email  orientation@ysu.edu [4] or call First Year Students Services at (330) 941-2131.

Remember: Placement testing must be completed prior to attending Orientation.  Email the Testing Office at testing@ysu.edu [5]or call (330) 941-1343 or (330) 941-1344 regarding your required course placements.

Register for a Placement Test Session [6] (once you have your necessary course placements).

When do I meet with my advisor and register for classes?

Academic advisement and registration are important parts of Orientation and will be conducted in individual sessions for students according to each academic college.

During your session, an advisor will explain University and program requirements and assist you in deciding which courses to take during your first semester.  Academic advisement is a "two-way street" and an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss various options with an advisor.  Plan to be an active participant in your advising session.  Since the information you will receive in the sessions prior to your advisement session is very important, you will not be permitted to register unless you attend the full session.

New transfer students are encouraged to make an appointment with their academic advisor prior to attending Orientation.

Will I attend advisement and registration with my parent(s) or guest(s)?

First year undergraduate students do not attend class advisement and registration with parents or guests; parents and guests will have a separate agenda during your session.  Students will be assisted by professional advisors and Orientation staff during advisement and registration; these individuals are trained to facilitate advisement and registration for students.  Parents should feel free to discuss academic plans at home prior to their student's Orientation session.

When will I receive my YSU student ID?

Once you have met with your advisor and scheduled classes, you will have your photo processed for your official YSU student ID at the Penguin Xing (2nd floor - Kilcawley Center).

What is IGNITE?

All first year students will attend IGNITE - a two-day extended orientation held in August - where you will start your experience to connect with the campus community, prepare for classes, and find your place at YSU.

Will I purchase my books at Orientation?

You don't need to purchase your books at Orientation.  In fact, the YSU Bookstore's supply may not be available depending on your Orientation date.  Most students return with a copy of their schedule or wait until the first week of classes to purchase their books.

Please contact the YSU Bookstore at (330) 318-3331 or visit YSU Barnes & Noble Bookstore [7] for more information.

How do I pay my tuition bill?

Students may pay their YSU bill online online through the MyYSU portal.  The payment options are credit card, debit card, and electronic check.  If a student is paying with a credit or debit card, there is a 2.75% convenience fee for each transaction.

Follow these instructions to pay your bill [8].
